Давидо-Гареджийский монастырский комплекс находится на территории муниципалитета Сагареджо. Небольшая часть монастырского комплекса (Бертубани) расположена на территории Азербайджана. Пустынные и Чичхитурские монастыри оспариваются между Грузией и Азербайджаном.
В первой половине VI века ассирийский отец Давид, со своим учеником Лукианом поселился в естественной пещере и основал пустыню Гареджа, который известен как Лавра Давида. Впоследствии комплекс Гареджи стал центром монашеской жизни. Со временем к нему добавились ветки.
Гареджа упоминается в исторических источниках как «Двенадцать монастырей всесезонного Гареджи». Но поскольку доступные материалы позволяли локализовать только семь монастырей, ученые связывали «двенадцать» с символическим сакральным числом, распространенным в христианской религии.
Пещерный участок Давид Гареджи находится в Кахетии. Он простирается на 25 километров по полузасушливым склонам горы Гареджа и до сих пор поражает посетителей своей высокой художественной ценностью в строительстве и живописи. Художественная школа Гареджи была основана в пустынном монастыре, которая достигла пика своего творчества в живописи Бертубани. Значение фресок Гареджи определяется также тем фактом, что он сохранил портреты многих исторических личностей, Святого Давида Строителя -в пустыне баптиста, царицы Тамары, Лаша Георгия – в Бертубани, Димитрия Преданного и других жертвователей – в пустыне.
