The city of Sighnaghi is located 109 km from the capital of Georgia Tbilisi. The city was founded in 1762, but received city status in 1801. According to historical data, in 1914 the city had 17,640 inhabitants, of which 51.03% were Armenians, 48.05% Georgians, 0.92% Russians.

The city is currently one of the most beautiful in Georgia. It was formed as a city on the territory and around the surviving one of the largest and most famous fortresses in Georgia, the Sighnaghi fortress, built by Irakli II at the end of the 18th century. The fortress’s watchtowers, 28 of them, have been preserved and are in good condition.

However, archaeological research has shown that this area has played an important role since the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Today Sighnaghi is often called the city-museum or the“City of Love”. The city offers an extraordinary view of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. In 2007, restoration work took place in the city, a museum and hotels were opened.

Here you can visit the Georgian National Museum, where the original works of the famous Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani, Church of St. Gevorg are exhibited.
