Основным занятием жителей старого Тифлиса были торговля и ремесла, Традиционные для города караван-сараи были и торговыми центрами, и гостиницами, и постоялыми дворами. Здесь, на пересечении торговых путей, нередко заключались крупные сделки и велись переговоры.
Один из первых караван-сараей в Тифлисе — Арцруни на Оружейной улице, возле Сионского собора. Построенное в 1818 г., большое трехэтажное здание вмещало 33 жилых помещения, 25 лавок и магазинов, торговавших оптом и в розницу, один большой и 24 малых складских подвала.
После реставрации караван-сарай снова открыт – в трехэтажном здании караван-сарая в настоящее время находится Музей истории Тбилиси. Музей был основан в 1910 году и с 1984 года размещается в отреставрированном здании бывшего караван-сарая. Позже музей был назван в честь известного грузинского поэта Иосифа Гринашвили.
Музей, в котором хранится более 50 000 экспонатов, представляет в основном жизнь Тбилиси в 19 веке: модели тбилисских домов, тип одежды, мебель и посуду. Первый этаж полностью занят сувенирными магазинами.
Изнутри здание музея напоминает типичный тбилисский двор, будто застроенный вкруговую, с овальным двором посередине.
