On the territory of Tbilisi there are sulfur springs, which are located in the areaAbanotubani, in the center of the capital of Georgia.
These are ordinary public baths, the water in which comes from underground. This water is warm and contains a lot of hydrogen sulfide.
These springs have existed since ancient times, and they were the reason for the emergence of the city of Tbilisi.
According to legend, when KingVakhtang Gorgasalwas hunting, he killed a pheasant and sent his hawk after it. When the king found the pheasant, he discovered that the pheasant had fallen into a spring of boiling water and was burnt. In some versions of the myth, the hawk also dies.
The king ordered the construction of a bathhouse around the spring, which was later turned into a residential area and then into a city. The spring water is really hot, the water temperature reaches 37, and for local residents it serves as a place for swimming.
Abanotubani – Tbilisi sulfur baths during the Middle Ages were not just a place for bathing in the city. They were also clubs open to local residents for 24 hours. There people communicated with each other, relaxed, discussed important issues and organized dinners.
