Музей современного искусства Еревана был открыт в 1972 г, по проекту искусствоведа Г. Игитяна. Главным препятствием для его открытия были Советские порядки. Все, что не входило в их рамки, не могло быть реализовано.Но, вопреки всему, не имея гос поддержку, музей все-таки открылся. Огромную помощь в этом оказали мэр города Г. Асатрян и армянские художники, которые подарили свои работы музею. Музей более 20 лет был единственным во всем регионе.
Постоянную экспозицию выставки составляют работы Мартирос Саряна, Минас Аветисяна, Каленца, Гарзу и других. Кроме работ армянских мастеров, часто выставляются на показ произведения зарубежных деятелей искусств, таких как Гарри Джон, Крисс Браун, Зиба Афшар и т.д.
Открывают показ экспозиции, картины известного современного живописца Гарзу (Гарник Зулумян). Он живет и творит в Париже. Его известная картина «Красная Комната» весит в самом центре зала. Работы Гарзу плавно переходят к полотнам М Аветисяна и А. Акопяна. Дальше идет Г. Ханджян, М. Петросян, Галенц и другие.
Экспонаты часто выставляются в музеях разных стран – Италия, Франция, Португалия и т.д. Коллекция музея постоянно расширяется. Она пополняется пожертвованиями художников, полотнами из фонда армянской диаспоры, и работами, купленными на собственные средства. В 2004 Ереванскому музею современного искусства были подарены картины Эмиля Казаза. В 2010 году были куплены скульптуры Карена Петросяна.
В музее часто организовываются курсы и семинары об искусстве, ведутся экскурсии на разных языках.
Художественное многообразие, колорит и уникальная техника: по ним можно понять каким разнообразным было течение современной армянской живописи.
