История основания Рабатского замка восходит к 1578 году, когда город Ахалцихе был оккупирован османскими войсками, а в 1628 году он стал центром Ахалцихского паша. В крепости находились все царские здания, дом Паши и главная мечеть Ахалцихе, в которой находилась одна из самых богатых библиотек мусульманского мира.
Следует отметить, что только мусульмане имели право жить в крепости. Восстановление Рабатской крепости началось в 2011 году. Для этого правительство Грузии выделило 34 миллиона лари из государственного бюджета. С помощью этих средств были восстановлены мечеть Ахмедие, библиотека, бани, цитадель, крепостные стены и православная церковь и туннель, который ведет к реке Поцхов. В настоящее время в замке находятся туристические объекты, такие как отели, кафе, винные погреба и амфитеатр. Рабат стал одним из главных туристических направлений Грузии. Крепость каждый год принимает приблизительно 15000 гостей, в том числе из-за границы.
Церемония открытия крепости после реконструкции состоялась в 2012 году. Открытие состоялось при участии президента Грузии Михаила Саакашвили.
Крепость делится на две части: верхнюю, которая считается исторической и нижнюю — современную. Мечеть, школа, гробница Паши, находятся в исторической части крепости. В современной части в основном можно найти туристические объекты, таки как рестораны гостиница, винный погреб, фирменный магазин и т.д. На территории есть все необходимое для комфортного отдыха гостей. Включая информационный центр с доброжелательным персоналом, которые предлагают туристам брошюры и путеводители на грузинском.
