Kakheti is one of the largest regions in eastern Georgia, which is famous for its abundance of cultural and historical monuments. Numerous churches, monasteries and castles attract the attention of tourists and excursionists. The most famous cultural monuments of Kakheti: Ninotsminda, Bodbe, Khornabuji, Ujarma, Sighnaghi, Gurjani, Kelatsminda, Alaverdi, New and Old Shuamta, Ikalto, Gremi, Nekresi.Each church-monastery is the bearer of old traditions, their nominal holidays remain in effect. This is the best factor for pilgrims or those who are simply interested in cultural tourism. There is great potential for the development ofwine tourism. The history of Kakheti winemaking dates back to the 3rd-2nd centuries BC and is still the most important sector of the region’s economy.
Kakheti has been an independent principality since the end of the eighth century AD. It was incorporated into the unified Georgian kingdom at the beginning of the eleventh century, but for less than a decade. Only at the beginning of the twelfth century did the Georgian kingDavid the Builder(c. 1089–1125) successfully incorporate Kakheti into his Kingdom.
The nature of Kakheti is very diverse, with semi-deserts, evergreen forests and even subalpine vegetation throughout the region. The lowest place is theEldar Plain90-150 m above sea level, and the highest: MountTebulo – 4493 m. The region includes the internal and lower reaches of the Iori River and Alazani River basin.
Roads and vehicles played an important role in the political, social and economic life of Kakheti. In this regard, the roads in Kakheti since ancient times have been quite good for both external communications and local roads. The relief of the Kakheti Plain provided a good opportunity for this.
The tourism infrastructure in Kakheti is developing rapidly, as it is the most visited region of Georgia. When traveling through this region, you can choose to stay in a guesthouse, a small and comfortable hotel, or a wonderful boutique hotel. Sighnaghi and Tsinandali(Part of the Telavi municipality) are the most visited cities. was renovated three years ago. Until recently there were only a few family hotels in Sighnaghi (simple rooms in a family house with a shared bathroom), but now there are several hotels.
