Pillar-tomb of Aghitu

Agitu is one of the oldest and most significant settlements in the Syunik region. It is located 7 km east of the city ofSisian, on the left bank of the riverVorotanat an altitude of 1650 m above sea level. In the early Middle Ages, with its political, religious, military and economic influence, Agitu was one of the leading settlements in Syunik.
In the village of Agitu there is one of the most important historical and cultural monuments in Armenia – a tombstone of the 5th-6th centuries. According to legend, the monument was erected by the residents of Agudi in memory of the three princes of Syunik, who defeated the Persian ruler who attacked the village with a large army. The monument is decorated with images of pomegranates, grapes, geometric and plant figures. Late Stone Age graves have been found in nearby caves.
The village has many historical and cultural monuments: a monument-mausoleum from the 6th-7th centuries, a tomb dating back to the 3rd-1st millennium BC. e., Cave – a shelter dating back to the 1st millennium BC. e., an early medieval church, khachkars (cross stones), to the south of the village there are the destroyed fortresses of Berdatekh, the destroyed villages of Dzoragyukh and Gyukhagorts. There are mineral springs nearby.
