Overview

Aragats stands as Armenia’s highest mountain and the fourth highest within the Armenian Highland’s expanse. It also holds the distinction of being the loftiest peak in Transcaucasia. Aragats, now an extinct volcano, is visible from Yerevan, as well as the Shirak, Kotayk, and Aragatsotn regions. The mountain comprises four distinct peaks, with the northernmost (4090m) attaining the greatest altitude, while the southernmost (3879m) constitutes our conquest’s ultimate objective. Ascending the northern peak of Aragats demands a more advanced level of training, yet the southern one is achievable for nearly all with the guidance of a skilled instructor.

The most favorable months for ascending Aragats are July and August, when the mountain paths remain dry and secure. When the mountain becomes blanketed in snow, only experienced skiers can undertake the ascent.

The name “Aragats” is linked to either Aramanjak, the son of the legendary Armenian progenitor Hayk, or to the god Ara. Likely, “Aragats” signifies the throne of Ara. Throughout the excursion, we will also explore the Alley of Armenian Alphabet Letters and the medieval fortress city of Amberd. Subsequently, our journey will lead us to Lake Kari (3200m). From there, we will navigate the rocky slope to reach the southern pinnacle of Mount Aragats, affording us the opportunity to relish magnificent vistas from the lofty realm above the clouds.

Today we had the pleasure of reaching Aragats (south summit 3879 m and west summit 4010 m). Full of admiration and respect of this mythical and impressive mountain and the hospitality of the Armenian people!
