Lake Aknalich is of volcanic origin, located on the border of Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions, 10 km west of the village of Tsaghkashen. The lake is located on the plateau of the Geghama Mountains, on the slope of Mount Aknasar. The length of the Geghama Mountains is about 70 km. The maximum height is 3597 meters, the highest peak of which is Mount Azhdahak. The mountain range contains several small mountain lakes, including craters.

Aknalich is located at an altitude of 3030 meters above sea level. The surface of the lake is 0.5 km, and the maximum depth is 15 m. The waters of the lake are fresh, fed by melted snow and springs. In 1959, thanks to the development of the existing lake, a large reservoir was created.

Aknalich is registered in the list of state natural monuments of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia.
