Монастырский комплекс Аричаванк находится в селе Арич Ширакского региона, на северном склоне горы Арагац. Монастырь был построен в 7-13 вв. Этот памятник является одной из жемчужин средневековой архитектуры, богатый изысканными барельефами. Постройка отличается простотой, идеальными очертаниями. Монастырь служил научным центром. В здешней школе в 1887-1889 гг учился знаменитый армянский поэт Аветик Исаакян.
В начале 11 века Аричаванк был разрушен из-за нашествий сельджукских турок. Спустя век по инициативе настоятеля монастыря вардапета (ученый монах) Григора учреждение было восстановлено. Комплекс включает две церкви (Св. Григория и Св. Астватсатсин (Св. Богоматери)), приход, ризницы, звонницу, часовню, школу и др. сооружения.
В 1850 году Аричаванк стал летней резиденцией католикосов. В те времени территория монастыря была значительно расширена: построили кельи, трапезную, школу, общежитие, гостевые комнаты и другие хозяйственные помещения.
Сейчас здесь есть школа духовенства, где учатся и воспитываются будущие священнослужители.
Древняя легенда гласит, что во время вторжения сельджуков многие люди вошли в церковь и исчезли. Сельджуки объяснили чудо тем, что силой души люди в церкви превратились в голубей и улетели. Однако в церкви было укрытие, где армянские беженцы могли спуститься на дно ущелья. Войдя в церковь, сельджуки, не найдя никого, пришли в ярость и решили выровнять церковь до основания. С помощью лошадей они сорвали 4 колонны на колокольне, но церковь не рухнула. Опасаясь такого чуда, сельджуки не пытались снова разрушить сооружение.
