Architect: Manuel

The Church of the Holy Crosson the islandAkhtamar, which is located on Lake Van, is one of the unique examples of Armenian architecture, which was a major spiritual center of Armenia and was an integral part of the Akhtamar monastery complex. The church was built by the architectManuelin 915-921.

In 1113 it became the center of the Akhtamar Catholicosate of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The Church of the Holy Cross (Surb Khach)is considered one of the pearls of Armenian architecture. This is a small building with a cruciform plan. The church is best known for its relief of six horizontal stripes on the external walls, depicting scenes from the Old Testament, as well as various domestic, construction and ritual images. The reliefs of Akhtamar influenced the further development of Armenian sculpture, parallels of which can be found near Bheno, Noravank, Sanahin and other monasteries.
The church is also rich in various frescoes, which are relatively well preserved.

In 2007, the church was renovated and the cross was removed from the dome. On September 19, 2010, after a 95-year break, a liturgy was held in the church.
