Водохранилище Азат, находится в регионе Арарат, на реке Азат. Араратская область расположена в юго-западной части Армении. С северо-западной стороны граничит с Армавирской областью, на севере – с Ереваном и с регионом Котайк, на востоке – с регионами Гегаркуник и Вайоц Дзор, на юге – с Нахичеваном, который является частью Азербайджана, и на юго-западе с Турцией.
Водохранилище Азат здесь был введен в эксплуатацию в 1976 году. Площадь составляет 2,85 км2, а общий объем – 70 млн. М3, питается родниками и является четвертым по величине водохранилищем в Армении.
Ахурянское водохранилище вместимостью 525 миллионов квадратных метров было построено исключительно для орошения в результате соглашения, достигнутого в 1963 году между Советским Союзом и Турцией. Водопользование реки Ахурян, а затем и водохранилища Ахурян осуществляется совместно с Турецкой Республикой на основе принципа 50/50, основанного на межгосударственном соглашении, достигнутом в 1927 году. Это означает, что не может быть принято решение об управлении только водохранилищем.
У водохранилища открывается удивительный природный пейзаж с рекой Ахирян.
