Food and Wine Tour: Delicious Armenia
The number one priority for Armenian hospitality is to feed our guests well, and frankly speaking, all our tours are actually gastronomic in their essence. Armenia is famous for its simple, but really delicious dishes, and the impressions from visiting the country will definitely be more complete if you taste the main dishes of every region.
But for real gourmands we have devised a thematic gastronomic tour of Armenia, which offers a deeper knowledge of the traditions and secrets of Armenian cuisine. The main concept of the program is the combination of excursion trips to the main attractions and degustation of the meals and drinks typical for that exact region. Our dinners and suppers are hosted only in the most interesting authentic restaurants and village guest houses, where everything is cooked with the use of fresh local ingredients.
The tour includes several master class sessions during which you will be given an opportunity to take part in the cooking process of dishes and desserts under the guidance of professional mentors. And since many dishes and activities are seasonal, the tour program might be slightly changed depending on the season of the year.
We would also like to emphasize that besides meal degustation, we have also included tastings of alcoholic beverages, and, as you already know, Armenia is famous for its wine and cognac. We will also try homemade vodka from local fruits.
Airport - city tour in YerevanArrival in Yerevan. After hotel check-ins we will immediately start our acquaintance with Yerevan. A panoramic tour and visit to the Victory park, Cascade monument, Republic Square and Northern Avenue. A visit to Matendaran – a museum of ancient manuscripts, where together with religious and scientific books we can find handwritten samples of old Armenian recipes. Afterwards, a study of the cognac making technology and degustation of Armenian cognac in Ararat cognac factory. An Armenian traditional reception in the Tavern Yerevan with a folk show program. Here we will enjoy khashlama (beef stew) for dinner. A walking tour in the evening Yerevan. Return to the hotel.
Yerevan - Garni - Geghard - YerevanDeparture from Yerevan. The only completely restored Hellenic temple of Garni and Geghard Monastery which is curved in a rock – these two make the most popular tourist attractions outside Yerevan in Armenia. On the road we will make a stop near the Charents’ Arch, from where a fascinating view of Mount Ararat is there to astonish us in good weather. Garni is famous for its fruits and really delicious spring water. Here a village dweller will host us for a dinner, just under the house of whose a spring with crystal clear and cold water is situated, and where a fish farm is located. Here we will have an opportunity to catch fish ourselves, and it will be cooked for us for the dinner. You will be impressed by how tasty the fish is. At the table we will also be offered homemade apricot vodka. Return to Yerevan.
Yerevan - Hovhannavank - Amberd - Lake Kari- YerevanToday we will go to the mountains. The monastery Hovhannavank on at the steep of the Kasakh Gorge is one of the most ancient buildings of Christian Armenia, dating back to the V century. A stop near the monument to the Armenian Alphabet. Then we climb up the scope of the highest mountain in Armenia Aragats to the Fortress of Amberd. The ancient Fortress of Amberd is one of the few preserved places that were typically built on the locations difficult for the enemy’s access. If the weather allows, we will continue climbing till Lake Kari, from where the summit is just a mile away. Today we have old Armenian dish khash in the Amberd Tavern for dinner – an original soup based on cow legs, which is eaten in a special ritual with consumption of vodka. The dish became so popular in the region, that many countries consider it theirs, but the facts that the name is Armenian and that it is the most delicious in Armenia are out of doubts. Return to Yerevan.
Yerevan - Khor Virap - Areni - Noravank - HermonToday we will set off for a circular tour with night stands in regions. The first stop is near the monastery of Khor Virap, just at the feet of Mount Ararat. Afterwards, we keep going southwards to the winemaking center of Armenia – Areni region. Here we will pay a visit to one of the numerous wine factories and will taste wine made from the indigenous grape sort called Areni. Then, with the consent of the archeologists, we will climb up to the Bird’s cave, where the oldest winery of 6000 years old has been found recently. Our dinner is planned in the restaurant Lchak, where we will offer you to try tanapour- a light soup containing matsoun (local yogurt) and long-anticipated pork khorovats (barbeque), which is considered number one dish in Armenia. Here we will have a master class session on baking lavash – Armenian thin bread, which is included in the list of non-material heritage by UNESCO. After the dinner we will go up to the monastery of Noravank, one of the most beautiful middle ages’ masterpieces in the country. Supper and night stay are planned in a settlement called Hermon. Here we will be served chicken stewed in wine with vegetables and spices.
Hermon - Hayravank - Noratus - DilijanOne of the most interesting days. On the way from Vayk region to Tavush region we have one more scheduled master class – selection and pumping of honey, production of chechil cheese or making pakhlava. Everything depends on the season. A visit to Noratus – a unique collection of medieval khachkars (crossstones), Hayravank and Sevanavank on the lake coast, from where an amazing view of the “blue pearl” of Armenia- lake Sevan is available. Degustation of dishes made from the goods from Sevan in a coastal restaurant Tsovatsots (siga fish and crayfish kebab). Supper and night stay in the Kasanova guest house in Dilijan. Here we will enjoy soup-puree harisa – old Armenian dish from overcooked wheat and poultry.
Dilijan - Sanahit - Haghpat - YerevanWe will have a brief tour in the green town of Dilijan and its surroundings. Then we set out for the most Northern region of Armenia – Lori – and its beautiful monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. You will be astonished by the mountain views with rich vegetation and deep gorges. The traditional bread in this region is not lavash, but matnakash, which is baked in special ovens, and here we will have a chance to take part in the bread-baking process ourselves. For the dinner we will have some khashlama (stew) with lamb or goat meat and dishes made from local greens. Degustation of homemade fruit vodkas. Return to Yerevan.
Yerevan - Shopping - Etchmiadzin - Zvartnots - AirportCheckout. Departure from the hotel. Some time for shopping for souvenirs and local popular products– wine, cognac, dried fruits, greens, sweets, gold accessories, ceramics, etc. We will visit Vernisazh – an open-air souvenir market and Tashir – a market for sweets and dried fruits of local production. Departure for a destination called “Armenian Vatican” – Saint Ejmiatsin – the religious center of Armenia and the Residence of the Catholicos of all Armenians- the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The town is located in 20 kms from Yerevan. Here we will visit the Cathedral which dates back to the IV century, the museum-treasury of Ejmiatsin, where numerous saint relics are preserved – among them the Holy Lance. A dinner in the apricot garden of the restaurant Van, where we will be served tolma with grape leaves (one can also opt for famous local kyufta or tzhvzhik). Visit of the Zvartnots ruins – the biggest temple of Armenia of the early middle ages and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Transfer to the airport.
