“Черная” крепость в Гюмри была построена в 1834 году. После визита русского царя Николая Первого в Гюмри в 1837 году, город превратился в замок-крепость, а затем был назван в честь супруги царя Александры (Александрополь).
Потребность строительства крепости возникла после завершения второй русско-персидской войны. Имея в виду возможную схватку, русские начали обращать особое внимание на укрепление Гюмри.
Огромные стены, построенные из черного обработанного базальта, по сей день впечатляет посетителей. Крепостные стены такие мощные, что на них размещалось 100 пушек, а внутри – 800 гарнизонов. Сооружение было построено по последнему слову военного искусства. Черная крепость – одна из редчайших сооружений в составе Российской империи, на открытии которого присутствовал сам царь.
Раскопки показали, что это самый старый населенный пункт в городе. Первые исследования здесь проводились во второй половине XIX века, около 1875 года. Позже, в 1900 году, немецкий археолог Геоснер раскопал под «Черную крепост», а в 1907-1908 годах, Харатянц. Раскопки также проводила заповедно-музейная экспедиция “Кумайри“. В результате раскопок было найдено небольшое поселение со святилищем, небольшой статуей, быком, древней гробницей. Вся равнина, от башни до конца замка, представляет собой великолепный археологический памятник, в основном мавзолей. Во дворе раскопанные Гробницы восходят к 8-6 вв до н. э.
