<\/a>March 4, 2010; it’ll become a significant day in\u00a0the history of Armenia, as on this special day US\u00a0House Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted\u00a0Armenian Genocide Resolution with a difference of\u00a0one vote. During a 1,5-hour discussion 23 congressmen\u00a0voted for the Resolution and 22 against\u00a0it. Recall that U.S. House Committee on Foreign\u00a0Affairs adopted resolutions with similar contents in\u00a02000, 2005 and 2007 but they were not pushed for
\na final vote in the House of Representatives.\u00a0Meanwhile, the Swedish (Rikstag) Parliament decided with least possible margin on the 12th of\u00a0March, 2010. By a vote of 131 to 130 the opposition’s\u00a0reservations became victorious over the\u00a0committee’s proposal. For this to be possible\u00a0required four centre-right members to vote against\u00a0their own parties. The massacre of Armenians and\u00a0other ethnic groups in 1915 was Genocide. The\u00a0government’s line was to not classify the massacre\u00a0of, among others, Assyrians and Armenians as genocide as it should not be up to politicians to\u00a0write history. Armenians have been living since the 5th century\u00a0BC between Anatolia and the Caucasus, a territory\u00a0that has alternatively experienced great\u00a0empires and kingdoms “from sea to sea”. The fall\u00a0of Byzantium, the setting up of the Ottoman Empire\u00a0and the settling of ever more numerous Kurds in\u00a0these parts radically transformed the setting for\u00a0history’s first Christian people.
\nA minority protected in theory by the “Millet”\u00a0status, the Armenians were subjected to heavy\u00a0taxes in the rural zones of Anatolia where in 1914\u00a0in some provinces they made up the majority of the\u00a0population. When Armenians first started to demand autonomy at the end of the 19th century,\u00a0the first response by the Ottoman authorities was\u00a0the series of massacres. The culmination day was\u00a0on 24 April 1915 when 1,5 million Armenians were\u00a0slaughtered; over 600 intellectuals, doctors and\u00a0priests were arrested, deported and progressively\u00a0eliminated. The governments of countries opposed to\u00a0Germany sent a text of condemnation to the Sublime Door, referring for the first time in history\u00a0to “crimes against humanity”. The protests were of\u00a0no avail. After the fall of the Empire, those responsible\u00a0for the acts were tried, but the sentences,\u00a0especially in the case of Talaat Pacha and two\u00a0other members of the triumvirate that organized\u00a0the genocide, were not strictly carried out and were often pronounced in absentia.\u00a0Countries officially recognizing the Armenian\u00a0Genocide include: Australia, Brazil, Chile,\u00a0Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Spain,\u00a0Ukraine, Vatican, Venezuela, France, Uruguay,\u00a0Argentina, Netherlands, Slovakia, Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Lebanon, Sweden, Belgium,\u00a0U.S., Greece, Cyprus, Great Britain as well as\u00a0Council of Europe, European Parliament.<\/p>\n
