On September 21, 2011, the Republic of Armenia will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its independence; a difficult and a long way of 20 years which since the first day has been full of difficulties, great changes, acquisitions and achievements.
\nOn August 23, 1990, when there was only one year left for the existence of Soviet Union, at the first session of the Armenian Supreme Council the Declaration of the Independence of Armenia was adopted, and this was the first step on the way towards the independence. One year later, on September 21, 1991, according to the decision of Armenian Supreme Council a referendum was held about not being a part of Soviet Union any more, and establishing an independent statehood. About 95 percent of the citizens\u00a0having taken part in the referendum said \u201cyes\u201d. 2 days later, the Supreme Council of Armenia declared Armenia as independent, sovereign republic. September 21 was declared as the Day of Independence.
\nThe symbols of the Republic of Armenia – tricolor flag, coat of arms and national hymn were re-established. One year later, on January 28, 1992, the army of Armenia was formed which is the guarantee of firmness and defence of the Armenian Republic.
\nAlthough the birth of the new republic was accompanied by extremely difficult political, economical and social conditions, by Gharabagh war, the Armenian people, who during centuries have always been passing through difficulties, could stand all this and win. Today, 20 years later, we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia with great enthusiasm and ardor as independence is the greatest achievement for each Armenian. We have the opportunity to live in an independent country, to build our future with our hands, to make our young country flourish and to present it to the world in a new way, with the way it has passed, its long history, rich and original culture. Thus, welcome to Armenia, welcome to the\u00a0independent Republic of Armenia.<\/p>\n
