Tour to Samtskhe-Javakheti
Javakhk was one of the 9 regions of Gugark province in the North of the kingdom of Greater Armenia (Greater Hayk); Armenian king Argishti I (786-764 BC) notes the name “Zabakha” in his inscriptions. Now Javakhk is in the territory of Georgia. During this trip you will see medieval castles and fortresses, Akhalkalaki fortress-city, thousands of shrines, and, of course, Parvana Lake.
The tour will start by visiting Gyumri, the second city in Armenia with its territory and cultural significance. Then we will head for ancient Akhalkalaki fortress-city, where Temple of Holy Cross is located; it was built in the second half of the 19th century. Javakhk also includes Vardzia (Vardzunik) cave town, which has 800-year-old history. On the road from Akhalkalaki to Akhaltsikhe you will see Khertvisi fortress, founded in the 2nd century BC. The mentioned is at the confluence of the Parvana and Kura rivers and is one of the best preserved fortresses in the territory of Caucasus. This tour will finish by visiting Gandza village, where prominent Armenian poet Vahan Teryan was born.
